What is Overtraining Syndrome?
Overtraining Syndrome (OTS) is a condition that occurs when the body does not get enough time to recover from intense or prolonged physical training. It generally affects athletes, particularly those training competitively.
It’s critical to allow your body to recover and rest after any strenuous physical exercise, especially if you’re attempting to push your boundaries to improve at a sport or activity.
Overtraining syndrome produces physical symptoms, but it can also harm your mental and emotional well-being. Consult a doctor if you experience pain or discomfort, weariness, or a sudden decrease in performance.
Types of Overtraining Syndrome
Overtraining syndrome is classified into three phases by healthcare specialists based on where it affects you and the kind of symptoms you’re experiencing.
- Stage 1 overtraining syndrome (functional overtraining) generates minor symptoms that may be difficult to distinguish from normal aches and pains after training. Your body is sending you signals that it is not getting better properly between periods of activity.
- Stage 2 overtraining syndrome (sympathetic overtraining syndrome): Symptoms of Stage 2 OTS involve your sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for your body’s stress reaction — your “fight-or-flight” response. Some doctors refer to stage 2 OTS as Basedow’s overtraining syndrome.
- Stage 3 overtraining syndrome (parasympathetic OTS) affects your parasympathetic nervous system, which relaxes your body’s systems. Stage 3 OTS is typically the most severe and requires the longest recovery time.

What are Overtraining Syndrome Symptoms?
Overtraining syndrome can induce both physical and psychological problems. The symptoms you experience are typically determined by the stage of your OTS.
Stage 1 overtraining symptoms include:
- Muscle ache and stiffness.
- Unexpected weight loss or increase.
- Anxiety.
- Poor sleep, or waking up exhausted.
- Getting sick more frequently with mild illnesses such as colds.
Symptoms of sympathetic overtraining syndrome (stage 2) include:
- Insomnia.
- Mood changes, such as being angry, anxious, or restless more frequently than normal.
- Tachycardia is an abnormally rapid heartbeat (greater than 100 beats per minute at rest).
- High blood pressure (hypertension).
The symptoms of stage 3 overtraining syndrome (parasympathetic overtraining syndrome) may include:
- Fatigue (being excessively weary all the time).
- Depression.
- Losing motivation to train or be physically active.
- Bradycardia is an exceptionally slow heartbeat (less than 60 beats per minute at rest).
What Causes Overtraining Syndrome?
Overtraining syndrome is caused by excessive training, practice, or physical activity. It’s natural to desire to improve, especially as a competitive athlete.
Many athletes grow up hearing the phrase “no pain, no gain,” yet it is not the safest method to improve at your sport. Pushing your body to its limits too frequently or too much at once might do more harm than good.
Overtraining may occur when you work out too frequently without allowing your body proper time to rest and recuperate between sessions. It may also refer to suddenly improving the intensity of your training. For example, if you are a runner and go for lengthy runs every day, even if they hurt or make you ill, you may get overtraining syndrome. Overtraining syndrome can also occur when you suddenly double the distance you go on your regular runs without first building up your stamina.
Risk factors of overtraining syndrome
Anyone who engages in physical activity might get overtraining syndrome. Competitive or high-level athletes who are actively attempting to improve or maintain peak performance levels are at a higher risk, particularly if they are ramping up training before a meet or competition.

Your provider may use a few tests, such as:
- Blood tests to determine your blood glucose levels. Blood tests may also indicate elevated amounts of particular enzymes in your blood, indicating that something is harming your muscles. High levels of urea, uric acid, ammonia, or creatine kinase in your blood may indicate OTS.
- Urine tests, also known as urinalysis, are used to evaluate kidney function and search for signs of infection or other issues that may be contributing to your symptoms. Unusually high cortisol levels in your urine may indicate OTS.
- Pulmonary function tests are used to determine whether your lungs or respiratory system are impaired.
- An electrocardiogram (EKG) to assess your heart function.
How is overtraining syndrome treated?
The best method to manage overtraining syndrome is to rest and allow your body to heal. The length of time you need to cease competing or training is determined by the severity of your symptoms. Your provider will recommend a time of rest based on how much OTS is hurting your health and performance.
You may be able to do small exercises or exercise briefly, but avoid pushing your body. If you resume training before you’ve fully healed, you risk undoing all of your gains and exacerbating overtraining syndrome (chronic).
Your provider will recommend the best strategy to limit your activity, but a basic rule is a series of measures that include:
- Stopping high-intensity training (sessions aimed to test your boundaries or maximize your performance).
- Reduce your workout intensity and frequency (typically by 50% to 70%).
- Complete rest (no training or competition).
If you’re suffering mental or emotional symptoms, your physician may recommend that you see a mental health expert. Psychotherapy can assist you in managing your emotions and changing negative beliefs and behaviors.
How long does Overtraining Syndrome last?
Everyone’s body is different, and your provider will advise you how long you should relax. The duration of your OTS is determined by the stage you are in and the severity of the overtraining.
In general, the early phases last around a few weeks. More severe phases might continue many months or more.
How to Prevent Overtraining Syndrome
Giving your body time to relax and recover between bouts of intensive exercise is the most effective strategy to avoid overtraining syndrome. It may sound too easy, but avoiding overtraining will help you avoid overtraining syndrome before you experience symptoms.
Listen to your body and become familiar with OTS warning symptoms. Avoid pushing through pain or other symptoms. If you’re preparing for a specific goal or event, consult with a coach or trainer who can create a personalized training plan for you. They will assist you in securely achieving your objectives and pushing yourself to new boundaries.
